Some traditional credit union leagues or associations are overwhelmingly funded by the largest credit unions, so naturally that seems to be their priority. Who is advocating for the unique regulatory relief needs of small credit unions? Who is encouraging small credit unions to stay true to their foundational not-for-profit mission, especially in an environment dominated by aggressively expanding "big banks?"
Our rapidly dwindling population of small credit unions represents the heart of not-for-profit community-driven financial institutions, and we want to survive for the members who need us.
ECUD fiercely advocates to protect small credit unions from extinction by:
Pushing for Regulatory Relief: We advocate for exemption from overly burdensome, costly and pointless regulations. If there isn’t an impact on safety or soundness, it shouldn’t be required.
Promoting Member-Centric Giving: We encourage small credit unions to radically embrace their not-for-profit cooperative roots and prioritize giving profits back to members. This reinforces our core purpose, justifies our tax-exempt status, and better differentiates us from large institutions.
The Road Ahead: While achieving meaningful reductions of the regulatory burden will likely be a long process (many are complex and intertwined with legislative processes), no other organization is advocating for our unique needs. NCUA Chairman Hauptman has declared his commitment to helping small credit unions survive, so now is our best chance to affect positive change. Let’s combine our voices, to save small credit unions from extinction.
